Oslo-based architects Snøhetta has completed a semi-submerged restaurant in southern Norway. ‘Under’ is the first of its kind, a 34 meter concrete monolith providing a unique dining experience with panoramic subaqueous views.
‘Under’ is located along the rocky Norwegian coastline in Lindesnes, a town known for its tumultuous weather conditions, and home to several fjords with icy waters. The building itself is half-submerged underwater, resting on a seabed five meters below the ocean like a sunken container. The restaurant’s half-meter thick concrete walls and three-feet thick acrylic windows were engineered to withstand the pressure of an angry ocean environment. “The roughness of the concrete shell will function as an artificial reef”, Snøhetta said. Inside the restaurant, an eleven-meter wide horizontal window offers a “visual gateway to the sea”, allowing guests views of the marine life outside. “In this building, you may find yourself underwater, over the seabed, between land and sea”. Interior aesthetics and bespoke furniture reference color palettes inspired by rough ocean waters, seaweed, and the color of a sun setting over the sea, creating a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere inside the restaurant. The culinary focus is a “new landmark for Southern Norway”, offering sustainable and locally sourced produce for an immersive gastronomic experience.
