The renovation of an old family apartment in the city of Santos connected us to different moments in the history of the city and the unique architecture of its buildings. The apartment had already undergone a previous renovation to suit the needs of the residents at the time, and again, the passage of time changed the family’s relationship with the space, generating other forms of appropriation of the apartment. The furniture and decoration of the house also reflected the passage of time: china cabinets, chests of drawers, chairs, tables, and paintings are memories and legacies of family loved ones and gave the apartment a more classic tone.

In its previous configuration, the apartment had a corridor access through the service area and the kitchen was set back, sharing space with a small bathroom. Besides the suite, two bedrooms shared a bathroom facing the circulation. With the new family dynamic, the need to expand the kitchen and living room meant the demolition of one of the bedrooms. The strategy of the project was to create a flexible space, which functions as a TV room or a guest room varying according to need. Large sliding wooden panels allow this flexibility and transform the space by combining full and empty. The panels, in Fórmica guava, contrast with the salmon panels that close the service area to the kitchen, demarcating the color palette defined for the project in different perspectives.

The kitchen was restructured as an island with the incorporation of the bathroom and the service circulation, which allowed a better use of the space for the kitchen and the living areas, and the reduction of the laundry room, of low use. This strategy also allowed an improvement of the kitchen’s natural lighting and a cross-ventilation through the apartment, from the living-room-kitchen integration. The project took advantage of the existing wood floors that were complemented with demolition tiles, reconstituting the original floor of the apartment. On the floor, terracotta colored hydraulic tile was used, which, by extrapolating the limits of the kitchen to the living room, strengthens this axis of circulation and articulation between the environments. On the kitchen wall, the hydraulic tile with geometric drawings alludes to the walls of the Santos canals, a symbol of the city and built in the 1970s.
