Interior architecture and designer Michelle Wentworth has designed the sleek and monochromatic ‘DS Residence’ or designer’s studio residence; a home in the city of Boulder, Colorado, that champions purity in form and pared-back interior design.
Designed to calm the transition between the daily rhythms of living and working, the home’s mostly black and white aesthetic with pared-back furnishing brings simplicity into focus. “The brief of the design was that it should easily adapt to the tasks of both living and working,” explains Wentworth to IGNANT. “Built in 1957, the original plan was divided into small, dark rooms with limited connection to the outdoors,” she says. The new layout however has two areas—an open living space and a separate zone with bedrooms and a bathroom. “Renovation stripped back much of the interior structure and all ornamentation,” continues Wentworth. “Raising the ceiling height to 10 feet and adding large openings makes the new design appear light, expansive, and connected to the exterior landscape.” Walls were painted a neutral white, while a dark finish was applied to tone down the original reddish oak flooring. Bespoke furnishings are minimalistic in their design so as to complement the overall calming and neutral palette.
