Working with wools and yarns, Peruvian artist Ana Teresa Barboza creates embroidered tapestries of valleys and landscapes. For her ‘Increase’ series, the embroidery mimics drawings made from the shadows cast by a plant over 15 days.
Each day, Ana would trace around the shadow, visualizing the growth and movement of the plant, which has now been translated into textile form. With balls of yarn erupting from the artwork, lying beneath each tapestry, Ana’s work sits between embroidery and sculpture. The yarn spilling from the canvas symbolizes the growth of the plant. This is depicted through the diminishing material as it weaves into the tapestry, illustrating the changing silhouette of the organic subjects.
