A house received as a family heirloom that needs to readjust to the new requirements of the owner. A house located in Santo Tomé, a city that is part of the conglomerate of Santa Fe, Argentina.

We find a modest typology, typical of country towns, resolved in a perfect and compact square, with a side corridor leading to the back patio, where there is a service area, laundry, workshop, and a gate that separates the garden or chicken coop from the house.

The expansion takes place in the interstice between the old and the new, creating a private office for the owner in the old rooms.

The proposed operation was to group a series of objects of different scales towards the courtyard that represent a new boundary. New objects that are built with bricks from the region, through the successive construction of layers, like the earth itself.

The brick is the rule, its measure defines the dimensions of the objects, the incisions that are made and their height, when it is necessary to open large openings, reinforced concrete appears as the answer.

When the brick is released from structural responsibility, so it is arranged vertically.

In the meetings with Jorgelina we learned some stories from her grandmother’s house that brought back happy memories and that we tried to recover and incorporate into the house. This is how, after the removal of the old kitchen roof, the internal patio inside the existing house came about, which leads to a tiled terrace for hanging clothes, and also the idea, still unspecified, of having a pergola in front of the barbecue to eat under the shade of a vine.

Jorgelina’s House proposes a positive transformation of the existing, highlighting certain indications found in the pre-existence and inquiring about the memory of those who inhabit it.
