Kaohsiung National Center for the Arts (National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts; Taiwan), designed by Mecanoo Architecten, symbolizes the transformation of the once large international harbor into a modern city with a rich culture. The huge complex is built on the former military base and is an integral part of the adjacent subtropical park Weiwuying, having a positive social impact on the citizens.

The broad crown of banyan trees, protecting from the sun and rain, is a wonderful expression of the Kaohsiung humid atmosphere. The banyan growing in this area inspired Mecanoo’s architects to create a wave-shaped roof structure with a wide range of functions. Its height ranges from five meters to several centimeters above ground level.

Curved steel construction was built in collaboration with local and Dutch shipbuilding companies. Under it are several concert halls and the public space of Banyan Plaza, which is created taking into account the subtropical climate and allows the wind to freely walk in the interior. Kaohsiung residents can stay there day and night, practice Tai Chi or yoga, have street performances along the walkways and in an informal setting, dance and hold movie evenings.

Smooth transitions between interiors and exteriors made it possible to design an open-air theater located on the roof of the center, where the structure bends to the ground. The building becomes an amphitheater, and the surrounding park – at the same time a stage and scenery.

The huge “crown” of the roof rests on five “trunks”, inside each of which there are halls for performances of different size and functionality. The premises are connected with each other through the foyer, in which, among other things, the Crown Hall gallery, and the underground service floor.

The performances of the concert hall (Concert Hall) for 1981 place are performances “in the circle”. His scene is located in the center. From it steps up the rows of seats, forming a multi-story terraces. Sitting on all sides of the stage, the audience is in close proximity to the speakers. In this space is assembled the largest double organ in Asia.

The walls of the hall are lined with oak. The public enters through the first floor, and spiral ramps lead them to chairs covered with golden cloth. The upper part of the room is hung with noise-absorbing curtains, allowing you to adjust the reverberation time in space for specific types of performance.

The Opera House (Opera House) with 2236 seats is arranged in the shape of a horseshoe with three balconies. He is able to accommodate orchestras from more than seventy musicians. The seats are covered with red and purple fabrics with a pattern of Taiwanese colors, contrasting with the darker walls.

The Playhouse Theater for 1210 seats is designed for a wide variety of performances and dance performances, so flexibility is a key characteristic of the design of this multifunctional space. The location of the audience adapts to a specific show: viewers can sit in front of the stage or on three sides of it. Attention is drawn to the interior, made in gold and purple tones.

In the concert hall for solo and chamber performances (Recital Hall) for 434 seats created the most cozy atmosphere. With its asymmetrical layout and placement on two levels, it is great for performances involving a small number of people.

The area around the National Center of Art is planted with greenery and trees, which makes it a continuation of the Veyvuying Park located next door. Thus, the urban style of the building is balanced by the rich natural landscape, creating a comfortable space for recreation.
