The project of intervention in a 1950’s villa had as a starting point to address a common lack of this typology, that of open living spaces. The property had already undergone previous renovations that kept uncovered only the garage present in the front setback.

With the premise of transforming this space into a living and leisure area, it was proposed to create an exuberant garden, despite its reduced dimensions. If, on one hand, this new place suggests a different relationship with the house – now much more open to it – it also brings the opportunity for a new relationship with the villa. With the opening of a large sliding gate next to the street, the garden becomes a square.

The interior of the house, with a narrow and elongated floor plan – 4.60 x 15m – presented sections that were difficult to occupy, as well as idle spaces in the usual layout for a residence of that size. Seeking a more balanced distribution of the program, a new veranda occupied the initial portion of the living room, establishing a transition environment between the garden and the interior of the house and offering an alternative for meals outside.

To make the demolition of the facade feasible in almost all its transversal extension, structural reinforcement in steel plates was used. The framing, in very slender “chair-type” steel profiles, allows a large opening of the room by means of sliding doors.

To support the foreseen uses in the garden, a linear element of exposed concrete was arranged longitudinally, close to the side border, to hold a small bathing tank, a bench for the garden, and a bench for meals on the veranda.

The same solution was applied to the back part of the house, where new elements tried to make use of the area under the existing glass roof. In addition to the concrete bench-support, the built-in bar counter and garden made this a permanent space.
