Astriped house by Wutopia Lab architects is a tourism information centre in Qinhuangdao, China, designed for a company Arnaya that wished to revamp its concierge room near the offices. The pavilion was covered with semi-transparent glass to achieve an effect of a translucent box. It was then surrounded with a solid wall so that an inner courtyard hides between the two layers.
Inspired by the ocean nearby, the sea-striped pattern on the elevation make a reference to famous sailor shirts. The stripes create an optical illusion and soften the solid shape of the building. A small rounded window in the construction enhances the whimsical effect.
