Transforming a compact apartment located in one of the trendiest neighborhoods of São Paulo into a spacious, comfortable and Carioca feel was the task of architect Nildo José, who believes in the trend of an integrated environment, full of stories and that brings coziness. The biggest request of the resident, a young carioca living in São Paulo on business, was a light apartment, with a sense of space and references to Rio. For this, Nildo bet on an interior reform, changing the original layout of the apartment and betting on the integration of environments.

The starting point was the apartment’s staircase. The sculptural structure of it ended up defining the bookcase, the bench of the home office and the framing of the main work of art of the project, the Danish artist Mai-Britt Wolthers. In the end, the staircase was the great protagonist of the apartment and demarcated the vertical circulation, almost as a trick – giving the immediate impression that the apartment was bigger, that there are more areas to be explored on the upper floor. The terrace, until then without function, was occupied by a glass gazebo framed with landscaping and a vertical garden, meeting the resident’s desire to be able to see the stars at night. In addition, the space has a pool with natural stone lining in composition with the Guatemalan green marble, original brick and wooden deck.

To compose the carioca look of the project, the architect bet on materials with natural characteristics, with some striking textures of the beach universe. One of the materials that stands out in the project is the Padouk wood deck, which does not need maintenance over the years. The lightness of Rio de Janeiro is present in every detail of this project, from the choice of colors, textures, materials and volumes to the demolition wood floor, artwork, choice of furniture and the participation of the zenithal lighting in the project.
