A Town House Revisited.
Before. The invitation to redesign a single-family residence was extended by a young family.

On our first visit to the future home, we were guided from a conversation about the desires for change. We entered the lot, and after passing by two car spaces – covered by repeated concrete beams – we opened a small door to enter the first room of the house, the living room. From then on, at each new door opening a new room was discovered, making clear the compartmentalization of the original plan, which, although it had a good backyard area, did not take advantage of its possible uses – except for drying clothes in the sun.

As we walked out toward the backyard, we noticed that the plot had a triangular shape, widening as we walked along the sidewalk. In the back, the little house occupied the land from one side to the other, organizing: laundry room, clothesline, service bedroom and storage room.

At the end of the day the main desires became clear. We needed to decompartmentalize and rearrange the use of the spaces.

During / After. For the subtraction of the walls, of some concrete pillars and repositioning of the stairway; metallic porticos were installed along the plan, reinforcing the structure.

The old garage space – covered by concrete pergolas – started to organize the arrival of the house. After passing through the new set of metallic doors and the portico in folded sheet metal, one enters the hall. The space has furniture in reinforced concrete and is demarcated both by the recessed floor – the same level as the backyard – and by its materiality, fulgent.

Up a step, guarded by a wooden panel, is the TV room. The space can be opened or closed through a sliding door made of the same material. On the opposite side of the panel/sofa, the metallic stairway that gives access to the first floor has the first landing built in concrete, which in turn, already in the shape of a bench, runs the entire length of the floor.

When you run the TV room panel, you notice that: living room, dining room, internal garden and kitchen, now have a view of the backyard, and moreover, no longer have physical separations between them. To reinforce the integration of the environments, we adopted the same material for the floor, polished concrete.

Part of the natural lighting in the living room is provided by a zenithal opening, which, filtered by a wooden muxarabi, draws a beautiful game of light and shadow over the plants. The design of this opening is repeated in the design of the floor – covered with red hydraulic tile.

At the bottom of the lot – demarcated by the transversal metal beam – is organized the wet area of the first floor. The kitchen’s cooking island and the bench in the rear, break the limits between the internal and external area, serving as support for the barbecue area.

By climbing the metal staircase – secured in the structural reinforcement – you reach the bedroom floor. Arranged on the side facing the villa’s sidewalk, the daughter’s suite has a new balcony, built over the concrete pergolas of the old garage. In addition, the bathroom has a cylindrical window, which at dusk generates an interesting light on the façade. The couple’s suite faces the back of the lot, and is characterized by its organic-shaped woodwork. It also has a terrace on the kitchen slab.
