OOIIO Arquitectura designs and builds two townhouses in Madrid, specifically in the neighborhood of Montecarmelo, one of the most fashionable residential areas of the capital. If you walk through the streets of Montecarmelo today you can see new houses everywhere, as it is a fairly new area of Madrid. Most of these new constructions convey few emotions, it seems that they were content to respond to purely mercantile parameters, forgetting that architecture is more than that: a house is actually a container of memories for a family, the stage where your life will develop together with your closest loved ones. When a family decides to build a new house, they are actually making a great effort to materialize a dream.

If your children grow up in a building designed specifically for you, satisfying all your spatial needs and it is also a construction that expresses emotions, is suggestive, is different, … then they will grow up in a stimulating and didactic place. When we all close our eyes and think of the words “townhouses in Madrid”, images of monotony and alignment quickly come to mind. It is true that the urban planning that governs the neighborhoods of Madrid is a real cage for creativity, they are regulations that function as alignment machines, factories of the same. But OOIIO Architecture seeks to convey emotions and sensations through creativity and uniqueness in residential architecture, just where we usually see soulless constructions. This can be achieved by applying certain design techniques, such as Dalí’s “critical paranoid method”, which allows us to escape from these restrictions. Of course, while complying with the norm, if we use these techniques we can let our imagination run wild to come up with unexpected solutions. So, for example, thinking of traditional sun protection systems such as the esparto grass blinds that can be found in vernacular architecture in southern and eastern Spain, the architects of OOIIO came up with the solution of creating rough brick panels that cover and protect these terraced houses in Madrid from the sun, configuring the façade.

As the Madrid sun is really strong in the summer months, the buildings are also composed with vertical volumes that move in and out to cast shadows on the facade surfaces, reducing the amount of exposed facade, creating a look similar to books on a shelf. One of the two houses has an interior courtyard and the other does not, but you will never see this difference from the outside. The interiors are warm, bright and cheerful. Although the houses may look the same outside, not knowing where one begins and the other ends, inside each house responds to a different configuration. Again betting on the personalized design of each solution. The houses are built for two different families, so it would be strange to make them live in the same spatial distribution, it would not make sense if we make a customized architecture adapted to each client.
