Mirela and Roberto came to us to design their first apartment together. Besides the natural demands of living as a couple, it would also be a union of multi-species families (besides the couple, 3 cats and two dogs, one of them being visually impaired). From then on, we mixed the interests and personalities of each one: she of the arts, literature, more romantic, and he of music, records and industrial style. The concentric point between these two different personalities is in the love between them and the animals that were added to this diverse family. Mirela, in our first contact, talked about her interest in “catifying” her home, and thus we were able to elaborate a project that would serve everyone both in function and aesthetics.

Facing the context presented by the clients, we built our narrative of project guidelines, of how we could sew such different demands in a harmonic and balanced way. So we created a social area that meets a little bit of each demand: a bookcase-playground for the cats, a low and modular sofa to help with the dogs’ accessibility, an office for Roberto to work and play guitar and a big bench below the window for Mirela to have her moments of reading, contemplation and to exhibit some pieces of art and of affective value.

In the intimate areas the direction was the same, being one of the rooms the temple for meditation, reading and display of Mirella’s personal items, another room with larger storage demands and a more industrial language for Roberto and finally the couple’s room, which is actually the family’s room. In this room, the large board not only ties together the storage and accessibility demands, but also organizes the sleeping space in a comfortable way for the whole family to stay together, but each with their own space. Finally, the idea of transforming the original service bathroom into a sauna was an interesting challenge, mainly because of the dimensions of the space and the functional demands and specifications for the proper functioning of a sauna. We wanted a minimalist and impactful sauna, so we also worked with a single line of Portobello tiles for both floors and walls, but with different and complementary colors in each section of the sauna, without weighing it down aesthetically in this small environment.

The bookcase of shelves in white metalwork in the living room was undoubtedly one of the main points, where we tried to conciliate function and design to an equipment that normally has little aesthetic appeal. Seeing the importance of the pets in the family, we had the freedom to assume this item as a prominent piece, with shapes and dimensions compatible with the scale of the apartment. Another item of great prominence is the couple’s bedroom’s deck, whose function is to accommodate all the residents of the house in a single structure.

In addition, trapdoors and special accesses help in the storage and organization of the house’s clothes. This design was drawn based on the customer’s comment about the concern with the access of pets under the box bed that they had before, entering dangerous and hard to reach areas. The deck was the result of blocking this access, added to other facilitating functions in relation to the space of this environment. The kitchen, in turn, was designed with custom cabinetry, with rounded corners, in an attempt to escape the obvious by combining more differentiated forms and functions.

Several furniture items such as chairs, armchairs, etc. used in the layout are from the residents’ school furniture brand. Since the beginning, the clients suggested that we use some Maq. pieces in an unusual way, being able to totally customize the color and fabric finishing. It was a very happy surprise when we came across not only aesthetically interesting and super functional pieces, but also a whole line signed by the architect and designer Marcelo Rosenbaum. Besides the aesthetic and functionality very well attended by the pieces, it was the final link for a home full of affective references of the family.
