The apartment to be transformed, located in Graça, Lisbon, with an area of approximately 60 m2, had 3 bedrooms, 1 kitchen and 1 bathroom. The almost total disconnection between the living room, kitchen and bathroom generated an unfunctional and even confusing use of space, which weakened the boundaries between the private and the social. In addition, both the living room and the bathroom had excessively small areas for a comfortable occupation of the space.

This project was thus a reorganization exercise to consolidate the social and private areas, trying to reduce demolition to a minimum. As a result, the living room annexed the adjacent smaller bedroom, allowing for a more generous leisure and dining space, and the kitchen was installed in the center of the house, establishing a direct relationship with the social area.

To solve the issue of the bathroom, it was divided in two zones, bath and toilet, which allows independent and simultaneous uses. In place of the previous kitchen, a closet was designed that incorporates a guest bed, not only to meet the need for more storage transmitted by the clients, but also to support access to the bathroom.

As for the materials, it was decided to keep the floor and recover all the existing carpentry and plaster work, extending the atmosphere of the house in time. The last transformation layer, chromatic, harmonized the new and the existing materials, giving the house a new identity.
