This residence was designed for a family that likes to host friends and relatives. There are 500 km between the clients’ home and the place where they built this vacation home, in the town of the family’s matriarch. The challenge was to design a building that would reinforce the family roots with the land of their ancestors, using architecture to motivate new generations to continue traveling such a distance. Conceptually, the residence is composed of three large stone planes that structure and configure the entire spatiality. The building was conceived to be “spread out” over the large plot of land, and the central stone plane separates the social area from the intimate one, ensuring that different events could take place simultaneously without harming the privacy of the residents.

With 352,90m² of area, the building proposes a contrast between the rustic and the bold, harmonically combining the typical stones of the region with the metallic structure. Having as its first concept the truth of the materials, the exposed brick and the wood used in the roof and mezzanine structures complete the materiality of the architectural object. “In this house, sustainability completed its social tripod, qualifying the team and bringing teachings that transcend a single work.” Even with the abundance of ironstone in the Mondaí-SC region, its use was limited to the construction of taipas and walls in rural properties. Mauro Wolf was one of those builders who worked the stone in a more rustic way. However, for this project, he received training to work with plumb, level, and perfect his technique in order to raise the stone walls that guide this project. After this work, Mauro gained notoriety in the city and began to be requested for larger and more sophisticated constructions.

“When the site provides the main materials that will compose the building on which it will be built, then we have a true example of Sustainable Architecture. The stones came from the excavation of the land itself. Most of the wood for the roof structure and mezzanine came from pine plantations made 10 years before, with the future construction in mind. The bricks for the countertops and walls are from an old, deactivated pottery factory owned by the family. The total of CO² that was not emitted by the use of the materials found on the land and captured by the trees planted for the construction, are equivalent to 486 trees capturing CO² in the period of 10 years.
