“It is located in a residential area just a dozen-minute walk from Gakugei Daigaku Station on the Tokyu Toyoko Line, and is a cafe and art room with cats.

About the existing building
The planned floor is the top floor of a three-story tenant building, so the shape is simple in plan, but a little complicated in three dimensions, with diagonal restriction cutouts directly exposed on three sides of the interior walls. There were many openings, but the brightness in the space was not uniform.
By carefully considering the differences in the atmosphere and the dimensions of each part of the space, we created a box that integrates the water facilities at an angle to the existing frame.

Planning with a diagonal box
The diagonal box divides the hook-shaped plane into four sections (entrance, hall, kitchen, and breeding area), which are necessary for the operation of the animal business.
This maximizes operational efficiency in the following four aspects, while at the same time mediating the relationship between cats and people.

1. Each compartment is partitioned with acrylic and perforated metal fittings that draw attention to the back and the other side, so that there is no sense of disconnection between the cat’s domain and the human domain.
2. When you enter the hall from the gallery by going around the box, the diagonal box gives a reverse perspective to the angle of vision, making the first impression of the space feel wider. In addition, the diagonal length of the existing space provides enough space for the cat to run around and play.
3. In order to keep an eye on the cats, the kitchen where the staff is located is positioned so that there is no blind spot from the kitchen to the hall. The wall of the box can be seen from all sides of the hall, so it can be used as a screen for events and for displaying art.
4. A circulation line is secured around the box, allowing for a fluid flow of tasks such as handling visitors at the entrance, taking care of the cats, and the kitchen.

About white
The floor, walls, and ceiling are all white to accentuate the cats and the artworks on display. Since it is the top floor and the surrounding area is open, the impression of the space changes from moment to moment, reflecting the scenery coming in through the windows and the color of the sky. In addition, the white wallpaper in the stairwell of the common area, combined with the sequence of climbing the stairs from the outside of the building to the inside of the store, gave the impression that the colors were gradually disappearing from the view.
The white color was initially chosen so that the cat would appear to be the main character, but this sequence of scenery, which was not within the scope of the design, also creates the effect that the experience is continuous from the outside of the building to the inside of the store.

Furniture that can be used by cats and people together
The stools, desks, and cat towers were specially made for necoma using void tubes (paper tubes), which are used for empty concrete pipes. The cylinders of the same material can be used as a hiding place or cat tower for cats, and as a stool or desk for humans, depending on their size. The aim was to create a situation where a place created for cats becomes a place for humans as well.

We also developed a new recycling material using waste cardboard.
They discovered that if corrugated cardboard is cut into small pieces, dissolved in water, pressed and dried, it can be solidified using only the glue component contained in the cardboard. By pouring this material into a mold, it can be formed freely just like concrete. TANK has long supported individuals and organizations engaged in animal protection activities, and donated a set of these furniture items for this project.

Designing a sense of distance from the context
The name “necoma” is based on the concept of “thinking about the distance between you and your cat.
In the interior, I tried to achieve this by eliminating as much as possible visible elements such as dividing walls and cages that would strictly separate cats from people.
As for the furniture, we planned to reuse cardboard, which is usually thrown away, in a beautiful way that would correspond to the attitude of treating the cats purely as cats, not as “shelter cats”.
